The iPhone XS Max was something that everyone expects. Leaksters in the industry had done their job well and by the time the launch event rolled around, we knew what the phone would look like and what kind of hardware it would have. What we didn’t know were the final details of everything that had gone into making the new iPhone XS Max. The phone’s price tag is high enough to cause most sane people to stop and think about what they’re about to do, so if you need convincing one way or the other, do read on.

FACE UNLOCK AND THE NOTCH

The notch is a universally ‘disliked’ design choice, but the reason for its presence differs greatly between the phone made by Apple and Android smartphones. While Apple used the notch to incorporate the host of sensors required to make faceID work, Android manufacturers used it to just add more “screen” to their phones. Samsung, ironically, is the only company that has stayed away from using a notch, instead preferring to embed all the sensors in a thin bar at the top.

Because of the notch, users are able to take advantage of two features; FaceID and portrait mode in selfies. Apple says that FaceID is now twice as fast as the one found on the iPhone X, and while I haven’t done a comparison, what I can definitely vouch for is the fact that it is fast. Regardless of whether I was trying to unlock the iPhone XS Max in bright daylight or pitch dark, it unlocked flawlessly. Unlike Samsung’s Iris/hybrid unlock which requires the phone to be lifted to eye-level, FaceID worked even when looking down at the phone, or while trying to unlock it from unconventional angles. Most importantly, it was fast enough to not even once make me miss the fingerprint sensor.

However, all is not peachy with the FaceID. On three different occasions, my sister was able to unlock the phone by pointing it at my face. The phone unlocked even before I could close my eyes shut (FaceID won’t unlock the phone if the eyes are shut). This makes me a little uncomfortable given how little control I ended up having in the situation. In fact, there was recently a report on how the FBI managed to force a suspect to unlock their iPhone using FaceID.

FaceID is definitely secure but requires the user to be aware that if someone was to hold the iPhone up to their face, they should quickly close their eyes so to not inadvertently unlock the phone, giving the other party full access to its contents.

Well, this iPhone may deserve the Max moniker, but its retail bundle is eXtra Small for a flagship. Just like the XS, the XS Max comes packed with Apple's tiny 5W charger, a Lightning cable, and a pair of EarPods. That's it.

What's in the box

The iPhone XS Max supports both wireless charging and fast wired charging, though obviously, you can't benefit from either out of the box. This year Apple has also ditched the 3.5mm-to-Lightning adapter, so if you need one - that'll be extra $9.

The good news is the iPhone XS Max is compatible with all Qi-certified chargers, so you have plenty to choose from.

The bad news is if you want to use fast wired charging, you'll have to buy both the charger and the USB-C-to-Lightning cable from Apple. And that'll be extra $70, you're welcome!

what's NOT in the box

We can all agree it's a bummer that Apple isn't shipping its most expensive smartphones with a fast charger, but there is one very good explanation why. It's simple - Apple doesn't want you to fast charge your iPhone.

Unlike Oppo, Apple doesn't have VOOC-like tech and relies on the regular USB-C Power Delivery chargers bundled with the latest MacBooks. Using such chargers will likely shorten the battery's overall lifespan.

Design

The Apple iPhone XS Max is big alright. It's as big as the iPhone 8 Plus - only with much slimmer bezels and a bigger screen. And it's the model many were waiting for since the iPhone X launch.

XS and iPhone XS Max

But other than being bigger, the iPhone XS Max has virtually the same build as the iPhone XS. It's a glass-on-glass design with a stainless-steel frame in-between. Nothing has changed since the iPhone X, at least that's what the shape suggests.

Apple did sneak a few notable upgrades this year though, with the most important one being the "most durable glass ever on a smartphone". This applies for both the front and rear glass and all those drop tests on YouTube have proven Apple didn't lie about this.

The glass is none other than a version of Corning Gorilla Glass 6 produced for Apple. Both companies have a long history of working together and last year Apple once again invested in Corning to help them create just that - the most durable glass ever on a smartphone.

Apple has been known for applying oleophobic coating on all its phones since the first iPhone and the iPhone XS Max is no exception. Both panels are covered with this coating that makes the surface less susceptible to fingerprints and smudges. It's not like this is some magic fingerprint-resistant layer, but it takes more time for the iPhone to get smudged and it's much easier to clean.

Another thing Apple has improved over the iPhone X is the water resistance. The XS and XS Max are now IP68-rated for up to 2m dive for 30 mins. Apple says the XS phones have also undergone and survived submerges in salt water and other liquids such as beer or coffee, but you should remember, the warranty doesn't cover liquid damage so the IP rating is only there to give your phone a better chance of survival should an accident occur.

Naturally, the whole front is occupied by the bezel-less but notched OLED screen. The Max's screen is 6.5" in diagonal, and content on it looks gorgeous. The notch houses all Face ID necessities, the earpiece/speaker and the 7MP selfie camera as usual. The top speaker is more powerful than it was on the X for better stereo sound.

Battery life

The iPhone XS Max is powered by the largest battery Apple has put in a smartphone to date - a Li-Ion cell of 3,174 mAh capacity. The iPhone XS Max ships with an outdated 5V/1A wall charger that will replenish only 18% of a dead battery in a 30-min charging session.

We also tested the iPhone XS Max on a Qi-compatible Samsung wireless fast charger - it recharged 15% in 30 mins.

The phone supports fast charging through USB-C power delivery, you just need to buy the proper cable (USB-C-to-Lightning, $25), and use a compatible charger from a MacBook, Pixel 2, or even a USB-C port on a Mac or PC. This way you will be able to charge north of 52% of an empty battery in half an hour.

We concluded our battery test on the iPhone XS Max and it posted balanced battery life scores across the board, just like the iPhone XS and X. It can do about 16 hours of 3G calls, 11 hours of web browsing on a single charge, or you can watch videos for about 14 hours. All of the three scores are up one or two hours from the iPhone XS numbers.

The Max, just like the regular XS, had an average standby performance, which is the reason for the equally average total endurance rating of 79 hours.

iPhone Xs Max specs

PROS

IP-68 rated,A12-Bionic is the fastest SoC in the market as of now,Class-leading display with HDR10 and Dolby Vision certification

CONS

Unnecessarily expensive,No fast charger in the box,No Lightning-to-3.5mm converter in the box

VERDICT

iPhone XS Max is not only the most expensive iPhone, but also the best. Its performance is far ahead of its Android counterparts, but when it comes to the camera, it just barely manages to creep past the Pixel 2XL. The iPhone XS Max may be an ideal smartphone for many users, incorporating the best of everything, but you are bound to baulk at the price, especially when you realise that this time, not only is there no fast charger in the box, but the lightning to 3.5mm converter has been removed as well.
